Colgate University Bookstore

Adaptive reuse and restoration of a 22,000 SF, 3-story, c.1895 building for the Colgate University Bookstore. Renovations to this building have returned it to its landmark status. The Interior was reshaped to meet the requirements of a bookstore that serves both the needs of the public and the University.

As a multi-level single retail space, the goal was to open the interior to draw the user through the space.

Part of the second floor was removed to create a mezzanine level and a decorative open stair was added connecting the three primary retail spaces. Usable space was created in the basement by lowering the floor slab and structure was reinforced throughout. Finely finished wood store fixtures are juxtaposed with exposed 3x12 wood joists. Rich colors, warm woods, intermingled antiques and books everywhere create a place where you can get lost in the books.
