Onondaga Lake Amphitheater

Onondaga County Lakeview Amphitheater

Working closely with the Onondaga County and Gilbane Building Company team, the QPK / WRL team utilized a hyper fast track process to design and construct this $50 million dollar facility in just eight months.  The 84-acre site is highlighted by the amphitheater structure, providing 5,000 seats under the long span truss pavilion and another 12,500 seats in the sloped lawn area. An event center within the building and its adjoining elevated terrace provide a stunning view of the lake. Site design carefully integrated the facility along the lakeshore bike trail, creating a distinctive point of interest and select destination. Select building materials were utilized to achieve a unique contemporary architectural character particularly at night with the illuminated pleated skirting on the pavilion structure.

QPK Design and the project team were able to accomplish completion of this project ahead of the tight schedule by employing a number of strategies to expedite work. Real-time decision making allowed us to make continual progress and to expedite work flow during design and construction. Early bid packages and pre-ordering long lead items were instrumental in our success. This included release of an early site and foundations packages to allow a head start of excavating about 100,000 cubic yards of material, relocating existing utilities and installing over 200 piles.
