The AFRC is a joint-use facility for the Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve. The project provides the necessary administrative, training and storage areas required to effectively train 1,335 enlisted personnel and 132 officers. The facility contains a 24’ x 70’ Weapons Simulator space, designed to house either a Laser Marksmanship Training System (LMTS) or an Engagement Skills Trainer (EST). The Weapons Simulator space is sub-divided into three rooms: a 24’ x 62’ Simulator Room, a 18’ x 8’ Control Room and a 6’ x 8’ Secure Storage Room. The Control Room and Secure Storage Room will house the simulator weapon controls computers and other support equipment. The space is designed for dual purposes, as it may be used as a classroom as well.


The 199,342 SF, 4-story Armed Forces Reserve Center (AFRC) complex provides:

  • administration and support spaces,

  • physical training (weight rooms, locker rooms, calisthenics areas, drill hall/ gymnasium),

  • commercial kitchen, and

  • classroom and weapons simulation spaces.


The 24,960 SF, 10-bay Field Maintenance Shop (FMS), for tracked and wheeled combat vehicles, houses:


  • 10 vehicle service bays,

  • a 15-ton overhead crane,

  • lubrication and oil distribution system,

  • oil/water separator, and

  • tool and supply rooms.


A 2-level parking structure serves 16 civilian vehicles, and a separate paved parking lot for approximately 400 military vehicles.


Site development includes a 340 SF Gatehouse constructed with metal panel, cast stone and bullet-resistant glass. The access drive and gatehouse are strategically located to provide encompassing views of the vehicle approaches and site. They are configured to provide sufficient vehicle stacking during high-use periods so that public roads are not blocked by automobiles waiting to pass through the security checkpoint. Access controls include a bollard-controlled entry lane and elevated-curb vehicle control. A pop-up wedge serves as the final barrier for emergency activation by security personnel.


Sustainable design elements include high-efficiency HVAC equipment, high-efficiency plumbing and lighting fixtures, low-VOC materials, materials with recycled content, and a reflective roof.
